Mesothelioma is a form of cancer affecting the thin membrane of tissues surrounding certain organs. In its most common form, it affects the linings of the lungs and chest wall. It has been soundly linked with asbestos exposure, but also occurs in people with no known exposure. It is particularly a large problem among veterans, since the US military was so dependant on asbestos use in construction for such a long period of time. Only about 7.5 percent of patients make it past the five-year mark.
